Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to: By the end of this course, you should be able to: Read and understand a Java-based software code of medium-to-high complexity. Write a Java application of medium complexity (consisting multiple classes). To use standard and third-party Java's API when writing own applications. Understand the basic principles of creating Java applications with graphical user interface (GUI). Create a rich user-interface applications using modern API like JAVAFX and others. Understand fundamental concepts of computer science: structure of computational process, algorithms and complexity of computation. Understand the basic approaches to designing software application and implementing the design using Java programming language. Indicative Assessment Homework and Labs (10%) Assignments (30%) Mid-Semester Test (10%) Final Theory/Lab Examination (50%) The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website. Workload One two-hour lecture and one one-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks. One two-hour practical lab session for each of 8 weeks.Naturally a considerable amount of self study is expected; with an approximate 120 hours of work for the course. Requisite and Incompatibility You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed COMP6710. Prescribed Texts Core Java for the Impatient, 2015 edition or later, by Cay S Horstmann (Addison-Wesley Professional, ISBN 9780321996329) Preliminary Reading Java Concepts, 6th Ed, by Cay Horstmann, John Wiley, ISBN 978-0-470-50947-0 Other recommended resources will be listed on the course webpage. Assumed Knowledge A degree in the sciences or engineering would be an advantage. Students with no programming background are advised to undertake some personal study of the Java language before taking this course.
