Submit a Kaltura Assignment – Students Skip to content TLC TLC Home Technology-Enhanced Learning Support Students Blackboard Learn Aston Replay Turnitin Blackboard Collaborate Learning Spaces Students Students Home Blackboard Learn Aston Replay Turnitin Blackboard Collaborate Accessibility Tips and Alternative Formats Blackboard Learn In your course Assignments Submit a Kaltura Assignment Video assignments use the normal Blackboard assignment tool, however, don’t upload the video file in the same way as you would a Word Document or PDF. Before you begin You must upload on a laptop/desktop computer. You cannot upload using a mobile phone/tablet. If using a laptop, make sure you’ve got it plugged in and are running on mains power. Switch off your Ad Blocking If you are running an ad blocking extension, or your browser has the functionality to block advertising built in, switch it off! It may prevent you from either uploading your video into Kaltura or adding the uploaded video into your Blackboard assignment. Check your broadband speed To give you an idea of how long your upload will take, you can use fast.com to test your upload speed. When you first visit the site, it will show your download speed. Click on More Info to see your upload speed. As a guide, at a top upload speed of 1.5 Mbps a 30-minute 1080p video could take three hours to upload. Tips to improve your upload speeds You may find upload speeds are faster in the evening when broadband is being used less elsewhere. If you can, use a wired network connection. If you are using Wi-Fi, being in the same room as your router will ensure you’re getting the fastest speeds between your computer and the router. Reduce your file size If you think your video is too big to upload on the connection you are using, you can reduce the size. If you used an application to create the video, follow the steps in the app to reduce the quality. If you didn’t use an app (e.g. recorded from a camera) or the app you are using doesn’t let you change the output quality, you can use a third-party tool such as Handbrake to reduce the file size. Open the assignment In your Blackboard course, locate the link to submit the assignment and click it Do not upload your video via the attach file option This will not upload it to Kaltura. You must follow the below instructions carefully. Click Write Submission – do not click Browse Local Files. This will reveal the content editor, below. To see all toolbar buttons, click the ellipsis icon. Click the Add Content icon – the plus in a circle which will be the last icon listed. Listed underneath Additional Tools, click Kaltura Media (you may have to scroll down) This opens the Kaltura window. Upload your video Next, you need to locate your video. This can either be a video file on your computer, a video you have previously uploaded into Kaltura, or you can record from your webcam. Chose below to see the instructions: Upload a video file from your computer In the top right, click Add New and then Media Upload Either Drag and drop your file into the upload widget, or Click Choose a file to upload to select the file to upload. If you are uploading a large file, this may take some time. Be patient and wait for the screen below. Fill in the required information in the form (it will take the video name from your filename), then click Save and Embed. If you see the Blackboard login screen within the Kaltura window Did you switch your Ad Blocking extension off? Make sure you have. Note that the video itself has been uploaded to Kaltura successfully, so you won’t have to do so again. You will need to follow the instructions, but this time follow the steps to Submit an Existing Kaltura video. If your browser now tries to download an empty file named ‘LTIMashupCreate’ This means that your video has successfully made it into Kaltura, but due to a bug with Chrome, it hasn’t added it to the assignment submission attempt. You will need to follow the steps below for submitting an existing Kaltura video. You have not finished the submission process yet! This completes the upload to Kaltura but does not submit the assignment to Blackboard. Read on to see the final steps Submit an existing Kaltura video Your existing Kaltura videos are listed on this screen. If you need to preview a video, you can click the thumbnail. Locate the video you want to use and click Select next to it. The window will close, and you will be returned to Blackboard If you see the Blackboard Login Screen within the Kaltura window… …you need to switch your Ad Blocker off, then try to submit your work again. You have not finished the submission process yet! This completes the upload to Kaltura but does not submit the assignment to Blackboard. Read on to see the final steps If you are uploading a large video file you may see one of these pictures Be patient and allow time for Kaltura to process your video. If you have been instructed to, add other assignment files to your submission E.g., if the video is of your presentation, your lecturer may have also asked you to attach the presentation PDF/PPT file, or some other supporting files, to your submission. If so, you can do so by clicking on Browse Local Files, which is shown underneath the content editor where you added your video. Submit your work To submit your assignment, click the Submit button – find this at the top and bottom of the Upload Assignment page. After you have clicked Submit, you will see the work you have just uploaded. Check it to make sure it is what you expect. Note You may not yet be able to view the uploaded video, it may still be processing. Check your receipt If you uploaded the video into Kaltura, the receipt would not show the filename next to Size and name of files received. This is expected behaviour; Videos are uploaded into Kaltura, a separate system, and then linked to your submission in a similar way to how a website might embed a YouTube video. If the Size of written submission reads 0 bytes, you may not have correctly embedded the video into Kaltura – make sure you check what you have submitted. Check what you have submitted If your school/instructor hasn’t hidden the submission link, you can review what you submitted to the assignment by going back to it. If you need assistance in uploading your video contact the TEL team.
