The University considers an exceptional circumstance: to be personal circumstances that are out of the control of the student; and that the student could not reasonably have prevented or accommodated; and they must have had a significant and demonstratively negative effect on the student’s ability to study or undertake an assessment. Additionally, the timing of the circumstances must be relevant to the affected assessments and/or period of study. All elements must be met in order to substantiate a claim for exceptional circumstances. For this procedure, we have categorised assessments into 3 categories: Deadline assessments – assessments not taken under controlled and timed conditions such as essays, assignments and placements. Non – examined event assessments - assessments taken under controlled and timed conditions such as, tests and presentations. Examined event assessments – formally examined assessments taken under controlled and timed conditions such as exams. You can apply for extensions or resits on deadline assessments, or an opportunity to take an event assessment again at a later date. To do this you will either need to make a Type A, Type B, Type C or Type D application. For more information, please see the full procedure. Please note: Ongoing conditions and other disabilities that affect students are not covered in this policy because there are alternative routes for arranging reasonable adjustments which would allow for a student’s entire period at the University. Students experiencing ongoing conditions or disabilities will benefit from registering with the Inclusive Support Service in order that their needs can be assessed and, where appropriate, an Inclusive Support Plan (ISP) can be put in place. Students can contact the Inclusive Support Service confidentially at any point during their course to check their eligibility for an Inclusive Support Plan, and to discuss possible arrangements with a Disability Adviser. Students with ongoing conditions and disabilities can still apply for exceptional circumstances if they have not yet contacted the Inclusive Support Service, if they are waiting for an appointment with a Disability Adviser, or if they have an Inclusive Support Plan that does not cover their current circumstances. How to apply If you are applying for a Type A, Type B, Type C or Type D extension, please use the Exceptional Circumstances application form. Exceptional Circumstances Application Form » You will need to provide evidence if you are applying for Type C, so please have it ready to upload to a Google Drive. You will have 10 working days from the time you submit your claim to provide evidence of your circumstances. Download a full-text version | Download a copy of the flowchart Final hand-in dates for deadline assessments with exceptional circumstances and ISP extensions*: PG January dissertations, PG September resit dissertations - 1st March 2022 UG and PG Semester 2 and Semester 1 resits - 24th May 2022 UG and PG Semester 2 resits - 12th July 2022 UG and PG (PG taught modules) Semester 3 - 22nd August 2022 No extensions can go beyond these dates (course specific exceptions may apply). This is to allow for marking before the final mark upload date, EXAMPLE - If you apply for two week extension for your semester 2 coursework on 16th May, the maximum extension you could get is 8 days. *All of these dates are subject to change if any further amendments to assessment schedules are required.
