This MSc course provides a unique hands-on learning experience in bioinformatics skills, by combining the latest advances in analysing high-throughput genomic, transcriptomic and metabolomics data. Cranfield’s Bioinformatics MSc is the first of its kind in the UK. With more than 200 alumni over the past 10 years, it became the most popular postgraduate course in bioinformatics in Europe. Unlike other Bioinformatics MSc courses you may come across, you won’t be sharing any modules or lectures with other undergraduate students or MSc courses. A variety of programming languages Experience taught us that there is no such thing as a single preferred programming language in the field of bioinformatics. Every programming language has its strengths and advantages depending on the task in hand. For example, Java can be quite powerful if you are developing a visualisation and/or standalone application, while R and Python are excellent choices for machine learning and statistical analysis. Perl, on the other hand, is a very easy programming language to learn by biologists and forms the foundation of most of the legacy tools and frameworks developed for the human genome project, and still being used to date. This is why the Applied Bioinformatics MSc is the only course in the UK that offers three dedicated programming modules as part of the taught component, covering R, Java and Perl. Furthermore, other programming languages such as Bash, JavaEE, SQL, JavaScript and Python are also comprehensively covered. This means that upon the completion of this course, you won’t only have the skills and expertise to develop optimised bioinformatics tools for various tasks, but you will also find it relatively much easier to learn new programming languages that were not covered during the course as you will have the foundation in interpreted, object-oriented, and statistically-focused languages. 3. A truly NGS- and 3GS-focused course Analysing sequencing data from the latest sequencing platforms such as Illumina® Pacific Biosciences ® and 10x Chromium® nowadays is a standard skill required for most bioinformatics jobs (a quick search on LinkedIn for bioinformatics jobs should prove this!) This is why the course includes two dedicated modules on analysing sequencing data. The first module, 'Next Generation Sequencing Informatics', focuses on preprocessing and analysing Illumina® short-reads sequences for performing sequence alignment, gene expression profiling using RNA-Seq, and genotyping for variant discovery. The second module, 'Advanced Sequencing Informatics and Genome Assembly', provides hands-on experience in performing de-novo sequence assembly using short and long-reads sequencing data, as well as providing computer practical sessions in developing and optimising your own assembler using the overlap-layout-consensus (OLC) and de-bruijn-graph (DBG) algorithms. 4. Industrial and research applications Drug discovery: Applications of bioinformatics in drug discovery is not only covered in the Applied Bioinformatics MSc course but is an integral part of the delivery of the course. Leading experts from multinational pharmaceutical industry such as Enrico Ferrero (GSK) and Lee Larcombe (nexaSTEM) are core members of the teaching team of this course and actively deliver several lectures and hands-on computational practicals. These industrial partners also offer a number of thesis projects for our students each academic year. Plant genetics: The Bioinformatics Team at Cranfield University works very closely with the Agrifood theme, which includes the Crop Water Use and the Plant Science Laboratory Groups. The Course Director has an established track record as PI or CoI several plant genetics-focused research projects. If plant genetics and food security is your research of interest, you will be given the opportunity to join one of our research team for your thesis project. Infectious diseases: We have a long-term ongoing collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Together, we work closely in establishing a molecular understanding of several infectious and tropical diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and Chagas disease. Each year, we offer three to four research MSc thesis project placements for our Bioinformatics students to work closely with LSHTM’s world-renowned leading experts on one of their ongoing research projects. Over the past few years, we published a number of research articles based on such thesis projects. Our MSc students were either the leading or co-authors on these. Visit project page Further reading - Applications of data science and machine learning in detection of meat adulteration This project by MSc student Rafal Kural (2014-2015) is focused on the application of machine learning methods to unravel hidden patterns of meat samples using Fourier transform spectrometry, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography and VideometerLab. Over the course of this work, it has been proven that it is certainly possible to obtain very accurate detection of meat adulteration, reaching sample adulteration level prediction accuracy of 100% for GCMS and 90-97% for FTIR and VM data. The module covers the programming basics required by students in order to program in Python, which is nowadays becoming one of the most popular programming languages in the bioinformatics community; and its application in retrieving, parsing and visualising biological sequence data. Exploratory Data Analysis and Essential Statistics using R Module Leader Dr Maria Anastasiadi Aim This module aims to provide you with an overview of important concepts in statistics and exploratory data analysis. The module introduces the main concepts in analysing biological datasets using the R environment, as well developing bespoke scripts for multivariate analysis such as principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering. Apply different data pre-processing techniques. Describe the difference between univariate and multivariate analysis. Apply exploratory data analysis using unsupervised multivariate analysis methods. Application of Bioinformatics in Epigenetics, Proteomics and Metagenomics Aim To provide you with the knowledge of the current trends in analysing epigenomic, proteomic, and metagenomic data and to demonstrate its principles, challenges, and complexities in bioinformatics. Syllabus Introduction of DNA methylation data (Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 and EPIC BeadChips). Quality control, pre-processing, and analysis of DNA methylation data through standard pipeline. Application of bioinformatics on DNA methylation data to assess phenotypic outcomes. Next Generation Sequencing Informatics Module Leader Dr Fady Mohareb Aim To introduce you to the techniques that have given rise to the genomic data now available, and develop skills and understanding in the bioinformatics approaches that facilitate evaluation and application of these data. Over the past decade, Next-generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) technology has been a huge stimulus for a lot of breakthrough discoveries in biology. This module provides you with an overview of many core types of NGS projects, including latest protocols in genomic and transcriptomic analyses, genotyping and variant calling as well as detailed hands-on practical sessions of our best practice data-analysis workflows. Machine Learning for Metabolomics Module Leader Dr Maria Anastasiadi Aim During this module you will learn about the main aspects related to the analysis of the metabolic profile in living organisms and explore statistical and computational techniques that are central to the field of metabolomics with particular emphasis to machine learning. Machine learning is a rapidly expanding form of artificial intelligence (AI) which has found many applications in the field of metabolomics. The fee quoted above is the annual registration fee and this amount is invoiced annually. The fee for taught modules is £1,380 per 10 credits, invoiced on attendance. Modules will usually be worth 5, 10, 20, or 30 credits, with the module fee for each calculated accordingly. ** Fees can be paid in full up front, or in equal annual instalments. Students who complete their course before the initial end date will be invoiced the outstanding fee balance and must pay in full prior to graduation. *** This includes tuition fees and endpoint assessment only. Under the Apprenticeship Levy scheme employers can fund apprenticeships for any new and current staff with the right to work in the UK and whose main place of work is England. This programme meets the requirements of the Level 7 Bioinformatics Scientist apprenticeship standard. Eligible organisations will be able to use their Apprenticeship Levy to cover the cost of the programme. If you think you could qualify for sponsorship under this scheme please consult the information pages on becoming an Apprentice. Fee notes The fees outlined apply to all students whose initial date of registration falls on or between 1 August 2022 and 31 July 2023. All students pay the tuition fee set by the University for the full duration of their registration period. For self-funded students a non-refundable deposit is required, which is offset against the tuition fee. Home students will pay a £500 deposit. Overseas students will pay a £1,000 deposit. Additional fees for extensions to the agreed registration period may be charged. Eligibility for Home fee status is determined with reference to UK Department for Education rules. As a guiding principle UK or Irish nationals who are ordinarily resident in either the UK or Republic of Ireland pay Home tuition fees. All other students (including those from the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) pay Overseas fees. British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM  Cranfield University, in partnership with the British Council, is proud to join the Women in STEM Scholarship initiative by offering five fully funded scholarships for female students from Turkey. Scholarships are awarded to applicants who show both aptitude and ability for the subject they are applying. Master's Loan from Student Finance England A Master's Loan is now available for UK applicants to help you pay for your master’s course. You can apply for a loan at GOV.UK. Santander Scholarship The Santander Scholarship at Cranfield University is worth £4,000 towards tuition fees for full-time master's courses. The scholarship is open to female students from the UK. Commonwealth Scholarships for Developing Countries Students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK can apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship which includes tuition fees, travel and monthly stipend for master’s study. Future Finance Student Loans Cranfield University has partnered with Future Finance as an alternative source of funding for our students with loans of up to £40,000 available. Chevening Scholarships Chevening Scholarships are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year master’s at Cranfield University. The scholarship includes tuition fees, travel and monthly stipend for master’s study. Back to course information Entry requirements A first or second class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a life science, computer-science subject or candidates with appropriate professional experience. The course is suitable for new graduates from a computer-science, life science or technology background who are interested in a career within the field of bioinformatics. The course is also ideal for professionals already working in the industry who would like to train to further their careers. The course is available on a full and part-time basis offering flexibility and support for those who wish to train whilst remaining in employment. English language To study for a formal award at Cranfield you will need to demonstrate that you can communicate effectively in English in an academic environment. Approved English tests for Applied Bioinformatics MSc Please note that: We verify all test scores with the test providers. We are only able to accept tests taken within two years of the course start date. All elements of the test results must be demonstrated in one test, we are unable to accept a combination of scores across two or more tests. In extremely rare circumstances we may reject a test score if one element of the test has a very low score. This would only occur if we believed this would impact on your ability to study with us or if the score did not meet UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requirements to study in the UK. Not all English tests are suitable for obtaining a Student visa for Pre-sessional study. You can check entry requirements on the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course page. IELTS IELTS Academic, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, IELTS for UKVI Academic - 6.5 overall and 5.5 in all skill components. TOEFL TOEFL iBT (we accept TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition and TOEFL iBT Paper Edition) - 92 total and minimum skill component scores of 18 reading, 17 listening, 20 speaking and 17 writing. Pearson PTE PTE Academic, PTE Academic Online, PTE Academic UKVI - 65 overall and 59 in all skill components. Cambridge Assessment English Any Cambridge Assessment English test meeting the required scores will be accepted. The following are recommended as being within the scale score range: Cambridge C1 Advanced, Cambridge C2 Proficiency, Linguaskill General - Cambridge English Scale score of 180 overall and 160 in all skill components. Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English - ISE III (C1) - Overall Pass outcome. LanguageCert International ESOL B2 Communicator (both the Written and Spoken tests must be taken), International ESOL SELT B2 (this test includes all 4 skill components) - High Pass overall and 33 in all skill components. Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Applicants who do not already meet the English language entry requirement above can apply for one of our Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses.
