If you are a postgraduate student, visit Preparing to Succeed. Determine the purpose of your assignment by analysing the key words in the assignment question and checking the criteria in the unit guide. Brainstorm your initial ideas in a mind map. Use this to make a more detailed plan that you can add to as you continue researching. It's a good idea to seek advice early. Talk to your lecturer and tutor. Start a study group with your peers. Discuss your plan with Study Support. Step 2: Research and take notes Be aware that this can often be the most time-consuming stage of assignment writing. Learn how to find appropriate sources for your assignments. For discipline-specific resources, go to the Library Resource Guides. Return to the assignment question regularly to keep your notes focused on the task. When note taking keep a record of which notes are quotes, paraphrases or your own ideas. Note down the full details of each source. Learn about why we reference and how to incorporate sources into your work. Get to know your required referencing style. Further refine your plan as you continue to research. Step 3: Write the first draft Don't try to write the perfect sentence at this stage. Just get your ideas into some sort of coherent order. Plan clear paragraphs that include topic sentences and supporting evidence. Discuss your draft with Study Support at any point during your writing! Learn more about academic style, as well as essays, reports, oral presentations and other assignment types. Step 4: Revise and re-draft Look at our guide on drafting an assignment. Check the referencing guide to make sure you have referenced everything correctly. Step 5: Proofread and submit Double-check the assignment submission requirements in your unit guide and any further instructions on your unit site. Proofread your final draft. Submit your assignment according to instructions provided in the unit site.
