INTRODUCTION 
It is acknowledged that people-to-people connection is the foundation of sustainable 
collaboration and development. As well as enhancing youth mobility is believed would bring great 
benefit for mutual understanding and future collaboration among countries. In other hand, 
COVID-19 Pandemic makes physical mobility becomes impossible. Therefore, East Java 
Universities are introducing East Java Exploration (EJx) through online platform. 
 
This short program is designed as a general course with multidisciplinary approach for 
participants to explore East Java in various aspects. Through online series of lecture, discussion, 
case study, observation, and direct interaction with people from different background, 
participants would gain better understanding about East Java and its potential and challenges. 
 
Each topic is designed in an online form in which participants will learn through online 
explanation and cases. It is expected that the program will enhance knowledge, insight, and cross-
cultural understanding. There is no doubt that participants will gain memorable experiences 
through fun learning method. 
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES 
1. Participants understand various topics related to East Java situation and challenges 
2. Participants are able to recognize and identify problems related to the presented topics and 
the way to solve the identified problems or improve the situation using a multi-disciplinary 
approach 
3. Participants learn cultural aspects of Indonesia and gain cross-cultural understanding about 
East Java people and its culture 
4. Participants are able to communicate their ideas and thoughts verbally and in writing to 
wider audience from different background 
 
ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM 
1. Academic related activities 
Session with particular topics that delivered by the expert. Students will be guided to have 
interactive discussion. 
2. Language and cultural knowledge 
In addition to the Indonesian language course, there are many cultural knowledge in the 
program, such as activities during Indonesian Independence Day, playing Rebana as one of 
Indonesian Muslims’ traditions, and making Batik. 
3. Online sight seeing 
City tour through online platform will be very useful for participant’s new insight and 
exploring experience. 
 
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION 
The certificate of completion will be granted to participants who attend minimum 80% of the 
whole program. Certificate of completion will be signed by the chair of the organizing committee 
& the representative of East Java Provincial Government.

Smart City in Developing Countries 
  
Synopsis A city is expected to be an urban area that creates sustainable 
economic development and high quality of life. A Smart City is a city 
that manages such development by excelling in multiple key sectors. 
Smart City has become a major issue in today’s city development in 
the world. Smart City consists of 6 main pillars, namely Smart 
Economy, Smart Environment, Smart People, Smart Living, and 
Smart Government. All these pillars can be achieved through strong 
human capital, social capital, and ICT infrastructure. 
  
This course introduces participants to the concept of smart city and 
how Surabaya evolves towards a smart city. Many aspects of Smart 
City including e-government services and one stop public services 
(Smart Government), Surabaya Intelligent Transport System (SITS 
– Smart Mobility), 112 Command Centre (Smart Living), Broadband 
Learning Centre (BLC) and community-based-library (Smart 
People), and community-based waste treatment (Smart 
Environment) will be discussed through an interactive teaching 
method.

History of Indonesia Independence Day Celebration 
 
Synopsis Indonesia Independence Day is always celebrated with full festivity 
as the day when Indonesia’s founding fathers -Soekarno and Hatta- 
proclaimed its independence from the Dutch and Japanese 
authorities. This independence has been long awaited by 
Indonesian people for almost 350 years. As a long awaited dream, it

is only natural to see people’s excitement in welcoming the 
independence day, even its celebration 76 years later. In this course, 
participants will learn about the history of Indonesian 
independence and the culture behind independence day celebration 
that is rich with traditional philosophy. To put it into pandemic 
context, independence day celebration has been constrained 
towards a more pandemic-friendly activities which often defer

Synopsis This course gives the students knowledge that Indonesian language

languages that exist in Indonesia. It is hoped that they will get an 
understading about the diversity of Indonesian language and can

Malangan Javanese and Walikan Language 
 
Synopsis Javanese is an Austronesian language spoken on the Indonesian 
island Java. East Javanese, which is part of the Javanese dialect 
continuum, forms the focus of this course. Malangan Javanese is the 
localized variety of East Javanese spoken in Malang. Despite its local 
domain, the language is widely used in the Indonesian social media 
and has its own youth slang, Walikan language or Boso Walikan 
Malang. Several aspects of Malangan Javanese will be addressed 
during the course, including its linguistic features and diglossic 
relation with standard Indonesian. In addition, the course will 
discuss the structure and characteristics of Walikan as a youth 
language.

Jamu : Indonesian Traditional Medicines 
  
Synopsis Indonesia's natural wealth has provided abundant resources to 
maintain the existence of Jamu. From generation to generation, 
Jamu is known as Indonesian Traditional Medicine which has 
recently been in great demand locally and globally. This traditional 
herbal medicine comes from medicinal plants that are believed to 
be efficacious by the surrounding community. This is both an 
opportunity and a challenge for us. Research on the bioactivity of 
various medicinal plants as raw materials for herbal medicine has 
been widely studied in Indonesia, such as antioxidants, antidiabetic, 
antibacterial, and antifungal, etc. Jamu is also one of the focus of our 
research in Laboratory of Natural Product and Synthetic Chemistry, 
Department of Chemistry – ITS. This shows that the raw materials 
of medicinal plants in herbal medicine are very useful in increasing 
immunity, preventing several diseases, and increasing stamina.

Synopsis Islamic new year is one of the most important celebrations in 
Indonesia, which is held with a variety of different activities and 
traditions. This course aims to provide an understanding of the 
history and traditions of Islamic New Year celebration in different 
regions in Indonesia. The course will give an example of cultural 
tradition and activities that Muslims community do when they 
celebrate the new year as well as identify the reason why the 
community still preserve the tradition.

Synopsis This course explores the varied intersections between tourism and 
memory within the context of East Java creative industries. It starts 
with the parallel developments between the emergence of the visual 
memory and personal nostalgia combined with academic 
exploration of memory and tourism studies. Memory, mediated by 
visual medium, such as film and photos are fundamental element in 
choosing a destination. It is strengthening by digital environment 
and the massive usage of social media in Indonesia. This 
phenomenon push forwards tourist experience at the destination.

model canvas. Through this project, participants will learn both the 
business and legal process in building up the start-up and will 
connect the east java start-up with a global value chain.

have become challenges to increase the benefits. Several challenges 
on the dynamic demand of international standard and market 
quality emerge as logical consequences requiring serious concerns 
from all parties. The challenges include the cultivation techniques, 
other products than cigarettes and cigars, management system from 
upstream to downstream in each tobacco cultivation chain to 
increase additional values and improve the tobacco farmers’ and
