committees hope to bring Neighbors members together for an afternoon “apple social.” We will offer apples grown on Stephen King’s Orchard in Sweden, Maine! Pietree Orchard grows great local food and aims to create a stronger local communi- ty. The McSherry family established the orchard roughly seventy-five years ago. The King family then purchased the orchard in 2007, in order to make sure the land remained a working orchard and farm. Today, Pietree Orchard grows apples, strawberries, blueber- ries, peaches, plums, nectarines, peas, green beans, tomatoes, flowers, and pumpkins. The Or- chard’s farms stand is open daily in season, with fresh fruits and vegetables, cider donuts, pies, pastries, savories, and, during apple season, fresh-pressed cider and even maple syrup! Next month we will hold our tradi- tional Tea and Talk! This year our Speaker will be the Assistant Dean and Chief Human resources officer of Harvard Law School Kevin Moody. Before embarking on his career in Human Resources, Moody served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Captain and Air Traffic Control Operations Officer. He holds an MBA from the Goizueta Business School at Emory University and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Brenau University. He also earned his BA in Psychology at Emory. Another exiting event is in the works is a possible free apple givea- way. Our Membership and Events Harvard Neighbors has a new Coordinator! After two years behind the steering wheel our colleague Faith Buckley accepted a position at the Harvard Faculty Club Events Office. Our English Conversation Leaders at the Welcome Party P A G E 2 140th Anniversary of Harvard Lampoon Have you ever wondered how the Harvard Lampoon started? The first volume of the Lampoon appeared in February, 1876. Written by seven undergraduates and modeled on Punch, the British hu- mor magazine, the debut issue took the Harvard campus by storm. “Our success was immediate,” wrote founder John Tyler Wheelwright. “Our first edition of twelve hundred was sold at once.” United States Presi- dent Ulysses S. Grant was advised not to read the magazine, as he would be too much “in stitches” to run the government. While no human was safe from jests within the magazine, the Lampoon soon branched out, supplementing its regular issues with parodies of other publications. Read more about the Lampoon’s creative exhibit here The Lampoon’s “Golden Period” began in the first quarter of the 20th century, and was led by such figures as humorist Robert Benchley ‘12, novelist John Marquand ‘15, poet David McCord ‘21, and communist agitator John Reed ‘10. Under Reed’s term as president, the Lampoon evolved from salacious puns and localized “Harvard humor” to highly literate, scathing social commentary. The first meeting of the new Group Green Living will be held on October 3 at 12 PM. Members will learn how to make natural beauty products and household cleaners as well as take home samples! Why prepare the products yourself? If you suffer from allergies it is important to minimize the internal pollution of the house. This is easy to do if you know which ingredients you will use and how they affect you. Compared to commercial "green" products, Living Green’s products are much more affordable, you can save as much as 90% of the commercial price! Handmade products are as efficient as commercial ones, with the added benefit of sav- ing you money and time. Living Green products are also recyclable! Living Green Products are also ideal for children as all ingredients are non toxic! N E I G H B O R S N E W S Follow us on Facebook!
