We offer undergraduate degree programmes, Master level programmes and PhD opportunities. We have a vibrant and internationally leading research programme that provides a broad-based coverage of fundamental and applied physics, strongly supporting multidisciplinary collaborations and actively fostering the development of new fields. We are committed to providing a positive environment that supports everyone in reaching their potential. Physics' Research Groups Astrophysics We apply the laws of physics and chemistry to seek to understand the universe and our place in it. Condensed Matter Theory We study the immense variety of solids and liquids provided by nature or made by humans. Experimental Solid State Physics We study and explore rigid matter, or solids, through methods such as quantum mechanics, crystallography, electromagnetism, and metallurgy. High Energy Physics Addressing basic questions about matter and energy, such as the origin of mass and the observed asymmetry between matter and anti-matter. Photonics We conduct applied and fundamental research underlying laser and light-based techniques and develop novel technologies to address applications. Plasma Physics A fundamental subject underpinning many wide research areas with a strong footing in spacecraft propulsion technology and e-chip manufacturing. Quantum Optics and Laser Science Our research aim is to explore basic science using lasers, and to characterise and control the quantum states and processes of photons and matter. Space and Atmospheric Physics Our aims are to undertake world-class research, and to train young scientists, in both experimental and theoretical aspects of our field. Theoretical Physics We employ mathematical models and abstractions of physical objects and systems to rationalize, explain and predict natural phenomena.
