The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions POINT-OF-CARE TESTING PROGRAM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL Document Number: POC3-600 Effective Date: 2/17/09 Title: Timing Device Calibration Check Page: Page 1 of 4 Supercedes: 10/15/06 The Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore, Maryland Purpose This procedure provides instructions on how to validate the accuracy of readings obtained from timing devices. Frequency The accuracy of timing devices are validated • Minimally, twice a year • When a timing device has been dropped • When a new timing device is placed into service Materials Equipment Supplies • Timing device(s) to be checked • Website: http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java • POC3-600F: Timing Device Calibration Check Logsheet (Appendix B) Procedure Step Action 1 On the Timing Device Calibration Check Logsheet, record: – Date – Tech ID – Manufacturer’s/timing device name – Serial Number of timing device to be checked – Location of where timing device is used – Point-of-Care (POC) Test(s) that use the timing device 2 The accuracy of timing devices is checked at two time spans near the time(s) the device is used. If using the POCT-issued SP brand timer, use the timer count-up mode. 6 Visually stop the timing device when the official U.S. Time Clock reaches the first designated time span and then manually stop the timing device at the second designated time span. 7 Record the observed time with units (seconds, minutes, etc.) of the timing device being checked. 8 Acceptable limits are determined based on the reading accuracy of the timing device being tested and/or reference timer. 9 Acceptable limits for the POCT-issued SP brand timer are: Time Spans Validated Acceptable Difference 10 secs 1 sec 5 minutes 15 secs 20 minutes 1 min. 40 minutes 1 min. 10 If outside the acceptable limits, repeat the timer validation process. 11 If the repeat validation is still outside acceptable limits, replace the battery 12 Repeat the validation process. If still outside acceptable limits, remove the timer from service and place another validated timer into service. 13 Document the corrective action steps taken in the comment section of the POC3-600F Timing Device Calibration Check Logsheet.
