Are you also open to working on applied solutions that help keep our country safe? If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. We are seeking a scientific software developer to help with cloud-based science analysis tasks. Key efforts involve develping analysis portals and assisting science teams with data-heavy analysis projects using Amazon Web Services. Most of our projects are for Heliophysics and planetary science, but we also support National Security Space applications. You will draw from your PhD experiences, but also be encouraged to generalize to other areas. Typical projects include science analysis, algorithm development for higher level products, assisting with calibration and calibration tools, and machine learning / data mining. We also define and develop software for opportunity analysis and instrument planning and commanding. You’ll be joining a team of engineers and scientists who love to combine their physics, engineering, and math knowledge with software skills to create tools for one-of-a-kind space programs involving both civil space efforts and national security projects. As a scientific software developer, your primary responsibility will be the support of multiple science projects that are seeking to migrate to a cloud-based approach. Projects are collaborative and cross-disciplinary, with coding done mainly in Python or Java. The software is the tool, and the successful candidate will be able to learn new tools as appropriate for the task at hand. Also, you will... work on several teams of scientists and developers use your science knowledge to convert ideas into software requirements, designs and tools present results at internal team meetings, to external sponsors, and at occasional conferences use a professional, team-based development process You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you: have a PhD Degree or equivalent in physics, engineering, or math, or a related field have experience with cloud computing, preferably using Amazon Web Services have experience with science analysis of space-based data (in-situ or remote sensing) have developed science or simulation codes in Java, Python, or Matlab are willing and able to learn new programming languages have excellent written and verbal communication skills are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected you will be subject to government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
