Introduction to IT Facilities at Kent 2016-17
The best way to learn about our IT systems and services is by experimenting with them
yourself. You can work through this sheet in your own time or during the special session
arranged on Friday morning in Welcome Week.
1. Library and IT Services documentation
o A basic introduction aimed at beginners is available on the web at
www.kent.ac.uk/is/hello/
o More detailed guides can be found via
www.kent.ac.uk/itservices/students/
o Briefly explore the above pages to familiarise yourself with the kinds of information
available.
o You will need to consult these guides again later to complete the remaining exercises.
2. Student Guide
o A portal that brings together a variety of online resources.
o On the web at www.kent.ac.uk/student/
o Try the Timetable link to view your weekly timetable. This may not be complete or
fully accurate before the start of term.
3. Kent email account
o All students are provided with a free Office 365 (Outlook) webmail account.
o Available via the Student Guide or directly at live.kent.ac.uk
o Your Kent email address is login@kent.ac.uk where login is your Kent username.
Please do NOT use login@kentforlife.net because this is only intended for use after
you graduate.
o Always use your Kent email address when sending emails to university staff so they
know it’s from a genuine student.
o Use your Kent email account to send a message to another student in the class.
Verify your message reached them (allow a few minutes for the system to forward it).
Ask them to reply and check their reply reaches you.
o Please check your Kent email account at least once a day for important
announcements.

4. Student Data System (SDS)
o Provides access to personal information about your modules and marks.
o Available via the Student Guide or directly at sds.kent.ac.uk
o Log in to SDS and check the information recorded about you is correct
(e.g. name, course, term address).
5. Arrange a meeting with your tutor (academic advisor)
o Each student is allocated a member of academic staff as a tutor.
o Tutors are responsible for monitoring progress, helping you choose optional modules,
giving advice about problems, writing references when you apply for jobs, etc.
o Students are expected to meet with their tutors near the start of term.
o Your tutor's email address can be found via SDS.
If no tutor is listed then please contact the Student Administration Office (S115B).
(If you arrived/registered late it may take a few days for a tutor to be assigned.)
o Send the email using your Kent email account.
o A short message saying who you are and requesting a meeting is enough.
6. Moodle
o Moodle provides access to learning materials, forums and other resources for the
modules you are studying.
o Moodle can be found via the Student Guide or directly at moodle.kent.ac.uk
o Look up the modules you're taking. Details may be incomplete at this early stage of
the academic year. Additional content will generally appear week-by-week as the
course progresses.
o Moodle also provides forums where staff can make announcements and students can
ask questions. See if any messages are waiting for you.
7. Library catalogue
o Copies of all recommended text books are provided in the university library.
o Familiarise yourself with the online catalogue which is available via the Student
Guide or directly at www.kent.ac.uk/library
o Search for books that may be useful for your course.
o Note that some reading lists may not have been updated for the new year yet.
Check with the lecturer before buying books.
