The following instructions should be followed to connect a personal PC (desktop or laptop) to the 
University wired network.  
By following these instructions, you will be able to gain access to the Internet only. Connecting your 
laptop to the wireless network DOES NOT ENABLE ACCESS to applications loaded on the LAB 
PCs or MACs, or printing to the network printers 
 
By connecting to the University’s network you are accepting the University’s 
policies and guidelines on the use of the Internet and computing facilities.

Connecting your laptop to the University wired network 
10.7 (Lion) 
 
Requirements: 
OSX 10.7 or later 
Java for OSX  
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1515 
 
Note: Once you have completed Step 1 and Step 2 successfully, for future connections you will only 
have to follow the Clean Access login instructions (Step 1, instructions 7 and 8) 
 
Step 1 – Connect to the Network 
 
1. Once the Java update above is installed, connect an Ethernet cable to your Mac. 
 
2. Open the Safari web browser 
 
3. You may see an Inactive Plugin icon once the Cisco Clean Access applet begins to load. You 
will need to enable the Java plugin. Click the Inactive Plug-In icon (if needed, you might be 
able to skip this step): 
 
 
Then click Enable 
 
 
4. Quit Safari and re-open it. 
 
5. This time, you will be prompted with a uoncas1.newcastle.edu.au applet request, click Allow 
(Note: you can also select the tick box to allow the applet to run anytime). 
 
 
 
6. Enter your LAPTOP admin account details (you may need to quit and restart the browser 
again)

7. You will be presented with the Cisco Clean Access Authentication page: 
 
 
8. Enter your student login and password and click Continue 
 
 
9. Wait up to 30 seconds and your browser will refresh or you will need to quit it again and 
reopen it. 
 
10. Quit the browser and move on to the next step to setup the proxy settings for Safari. 
 
 
 
 
Step 2 - Set the Proxy 
 
1. Select the Wi-Fi on the left 
 
2. Select the Advanced button

3. Select the Proxies tab and tick the tick box for Automatic Proxy Configuration, put in the 
proxy details in full:  http://proxy.newcastle.edu.au/proxy.pac 
  Click OK 
 
 
 
 
4. Click Apply on the Networks window 
 
5. Close the Network window and open a web browser and it should prompt you for the proxy 
details. You should now be able to connect to websites on the Internet.
