Research Associate Position Defense Analysis Department Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA Introduction The Naval Postgraduate School is an academic institution whose emphasis is on study and research programs relevant to the Navy's interests, as well as to the interests of other arms of the Department of Defense. The programs are designed to accommodate the unique requirements of the military. CORE Lab Research Associate The Department of Defense Analysis is home to the CORE (Common Operational Research Environment) Lab. The CORE Lab was established in 2007 with the mission to support U.S. and International field operatives in the analytical craft of integrating geospatial, cultural, relational, and temporal data to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Irregular Warfare environment. CORE is the only lab in the country that purely focuses on visual analytic analysis of Irregular Warfare (IW) problem sets in direct support of Soldiers on the Ground. We are looking for a Research Associate to work under the direction of a faculty member to support various projects in the CORE Lab to include the development of methodology for analyzing population‐centric social media in order to support the Dynamic Twitter Network Analysis (DTNA). Qualifications: • Extensive knowledge in developing applications for both Android and OS platforms. • Current PhD student preferred, Master’s degree required, preferably in Social Network Analysis, Data Mining, Data Visualization, or a related field. • Must have background in analyzing social network data as well as geospatial, temporal, and standard statistical analysis of large datasets. • Experience in teaching data visualization at the Masters level, as well as extensive knowledge including but not limited to R, Python, D3.js, Gephi, C++, Java, VB, MySQL, HTML, and JavaScript • Experience visualizing and analyzing information from various social media APIs geospatially, semantically, temporally, and as a social network. • Experience with extracting communities from large social network graphs. • Strong organizational and writing skills. • Knowledge of and experience with analyzing social media data. • Excellent communication and correspondence skills. • Interest and willingness to work with military and government personnel.
