Since this course is an AP class, it is one weighted credit. Learning to program can be challenging, sometimes frustrating, but completing programming projects successfully can be one of the most rewarding experiences you may have as a high school student. Course Objectives: Use the Java programming language and other tools to learn about program design and implementation, input/output, variables, conditional statements, loops, methods, objects, Boolean logic, one and two dimensional arrays, recursion, inheritance, interfaces, abstract methods and classes, and searching and sorting methods in computer science. The goals and strategies developed by the College Board are implemented throughout the course. More information about the course can be found on this link: http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/ap/ap-computer-science-a-course-description- 2014.pdf Computer Lab Specifics: - No gum, food, or drinks allowed in the computer lab. You may drink water that’s in a clear container, but it must stay at the desks, not by the computers. - Do not change any properties or tamper with any computer. - You may not use any software other than what is needed for your assignments. This means NO games, NO internet (except for research for this class, or coding exercises), NO e-mail, etc. If you finish a lab exercise early, you can explore another topic (future lab) or help your neighbor. - Do not give your password to anyone - Abide by School Computer/Internet Use Policy Supplies: - Flash Drive or External Hard Drive to store files, 2 GB or above. - You will need your textbook, pencil and paper daily - Most assignments are turned in online - Recommended but not required: a.) Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam, by Maria and Gary Litvin, 2014, Skylight Publishing. http://www.skylit.com/beprepared-java.html b.) Barron’s AP Computer Science A. http://www.barronseduc.com/1438001525.html c.) The Java Methods textbook by Maria and Gary Litvin can be checked out from the teacher and used as an extra resource. BACKUP your work. Keep a copy of ALL your files on a Flash Drive AND on your PC at home. If you LOSE your Flash Drive and have NOT backed up your files at home you are still responsible for completing work. GRADING POLICY: Grading will follow the Prince William County guidelines for high school instruction. Although grades will be weighted to show importance, no single grade will count more than 20% of the marking period grade. A student who fails to complete 60% of the assigned evaluated work will fail for the marking period. All assignments must be completed neatly in pencil. Grades are determined by the following: 60% Large Summative Assessments - Tests 20% Small Summative Assessments - Quizzes 17% Formative Assessments – Labs 3% Formative Assessments – Worksheets & Misc. Classwork LATE POLICY: Students are expected to turn all work in on time. However, if a student turns in an assignment late, the following will be the maximum grade a student will earn: 1-3 days late….. 75% maximum credit 4-6 days late …. 60% maximum credit 7+ days ………. 50% maximum credit Students have 7 school days to turn in late work. After 7 days, the teacher has the ability to leave an NHI in the gradebook. Allowances may be made for excused absences at the teacher’s discretion. RETAKE POLICY: Students may only retake 5 summative assessments per school year. It is expected that students take the time to get the necessary help before they take the retake assessment. In order to retake any summative assessment, the student must satisfactorily complete the alternative assignment prior to the deadline of when the test shall be taken, set by the teacher. In addition to completing the alternative assessment, the student must complete and demonstrate mastery for ALL the assigned work for that unit before being allowed to complete a retake. Unless otherwise indicated, students will have 7 school days after the day of the test to complete the retake. Tests will not be released to students. If students wish to go over a test, they can come see it and correct it during my office hours or during Flex. Students are expected to make sure they understand the concepts before taking the retake. The better grade on the two assessments will be the student’s final grade. A retake is a privilege not a right. The privilege of a retake will be at the discretion of the teacher. If a student is absent on a test day and chooses not to take the test the day that he/she comes back to class, the student forfeits his/her right to take retake that test. ABSENCES: Students are expected to continue their learning and assignments even when they miss school. Students should refer to SchoolFusion to get missed work, notes, and resources before attempting the assignment. When a student is absent, it is expected that he or she will attempt to do the assignment. If a student is present the day prior to a quiz or test, but absent the day the class takes the assessment, the student must take the assessment upon return to class. Remember to make up any missed assignments as soon as possible! EXPECTATIONS: Active participation in class is an expectation of all students at Patriot High School. Students are expected to uphold the regulations in the PWCPS Code of Behavior and the rules and regulations of Patriot High School outlined in the school handbook. AP teachers’ hands-on approach to learning takes you out of the typical classroom and into an experience that will prepare you for college and beyond…If you are willing to work hard, you’ll find that the qualities you use in other parts of your life can help you achieve your goals…When you get to college, you’ll be asked to manage your own time and study habits, while tackling challenging problems and subject areas. This is what you get when you take an AP class, with the added benefit of your AP teacher helping you throughout the journey. AP courses let you see and feel what college work is like, while receiving the support to help you get there. - College Board (http://student.collegeboard.org/) AP brings the college experience to your high school with the opportunity to earn college credit at thousands of universities. Please visit the College Board credit search site for specific college and university policies: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies Expectations for AP Students at Patriot High School: 1. Assignments will be completed in a timely manner and in their entirety. 2. Students will adequately prepare for all assessments. 3. As a college-level course, this AP class with have a heavier workload and students must adopt adequate time management strategies. 4. AP requires higher level thinking skills which will be developed in this course. You will be expected to do more than merely memorize information for the purpose of demonstrating content mastery. 5. Your grade is weighted due to elevated expectations associated with a college-level course. A lower grade in an AP course may correlate to a higher grade in a standard course. 6. You will take the AP exam in May. Late Work: Students have 7 school days to turn in late work. Deductions follow the current Patriot late work policy. After 7 days, the teacher has the ability to leave an NHI in the gradebook. Allowances may be made for excused absences at the teacher’s discretion. I have read and understand the expectations for Advanced Placement courses at Patriot High School. I understand that this is a college-level class and I may earn college credit with a qualifying score on the AP Exam, depending on my chosen college/university’s AP credit policy. Therefore, it is more rigorous than a standard-level course. I also understand that the pace will be faster and success will require extensive studying, timely completion of homework and classwork assignments, and adequate preparation for assessments. I know that, in this class, more information will be taught. As a result, assessments will be more difficult and over more information than a standard-level course. This is to prepare students for the AP exam in May, which is a requirement for all AP students. Student Signature____________________ Date________Parent Signature _______________________Date______
