Please contact gs.cmi@qub.ac.uk if you have any further queries. Assignments Assignment Deadlines You will have a period of approximately four weeks in which to complete each assignment. The assignments for each unit should be completed before the start of the next unit. The deadlines will be shared when the 2019-20 programme is finalised and will be confirmed by your tutor on issuing the assignment task. You should take sensible precautions against accidents and last minute problems, both in terms of being careful about storing work in progress and not leaving things until too late. You should also consider the relative weighting of different assessment elements, and allocate each element an appropriate amount of time. Late submission without approved extension (as set out in Section 5.2 below) will not be accepted. All students are assigned to a tutor group - details of which are provided on the CMI classnote. Tutors will have weekly drop-in sessions during delivery - please contact gs.cmi@qub.ac.uk for further information. Extension Rules Illness and accidents do happen and can affect your assessed work so do familiarise yourself with how to go about flagging exceptional circumstances. It is important that you let us know before the submission date, if you have any difficulties in completing your assignments. If you have exceptional or mitigating circumstances you may be granted a short extension to allow you to complete your work. The type of circumstances in which a tutor may grant an extension include. Your own serious illness or accident. The death or serious illness of a close relative. A sudden deterioration of a disability or chronic health condition. You may be asked to provide a letter from your doctor to support your need for more time to complete your work. The Programme Director for CMI at Queen’s, or delegate, will consider requests and make decisions whether to grant extensions, and for what duration. Exceptional Circumstances If you have difficulties and/or additional needs, please contact the CMI Programme Co-ordinator or speak with your tutor in confidence. They will do all they can to ensure you have the assistance you need to complete your course. Exceptional circumstances may be a factor in considering a request for an extension of an assignment deadline (see Section 5.2). A student may also draw upon Exceptional Circumstances to explain inability to meet the attendance requirements for a course. Evidence of exceptional circumstances must be submitted to the Graduate School by email, by the published deadline. As set out in Section 5.2 above, if you know you are going to miss a training day or assignment deadline because of exceptional circumstances, you should inform the CMI Programme Co-ordinator in advance by telephone or email of your absence. Evidence of exceptional circumstances and their impact on academic performance will be considered by the Queen’s CMI Project Team and, if approved, concessions to the attendance requirement made on the basis of exceptional circumstances. The Project Team is not obliged to consider any medical certificate or evidence of exceptional circumstances presented after the published deadline. The exception to this is where a concession has been granted on the grounds of a student’s disability. Presentation of Work All assignments should be typed and submitted as word documents. The preferred format is double line spaced in Arial style 12 Font. Should this cause any problem to you please contact the CMI Programme Co-ordinator as soon as possible. To improve the presentation of your assignments use appropriate paragraphs, sections or sub-headings and ensure you leave a margin on both sides of the paper. If you have looked at articles or books to complete your assignment remember to note them down at the end of your assignment as a bibliography (this should be listed alphabetically). This will help the reader to know where you got your ideas from, and help you find the book again if you want to refer to the information again in your continuing studies. You should ensure that your assignment is within the word limit stated in the brief given. The assignment will be assessed up to the maximum word limit only and not beyond. Assignments must be submitted as word documents only. Appendices documents may be in any format as these are not subject to a word limit. Students should aim to minimise the amount of unnecessary attachments or appendices. Information that is essential to the student’s work in order to meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria should be included within the main body of the report. From time to time a student may need to include additional supporting information which enhances the overall work and it is recommended that it is kept to a minimum and does not over-exceed. It is at the discretion of the Graduate School/Assessor whether or not to accept assignments that exceed the word limit. If accepted, the assignment will be assessed up to the maximum word limit. Referencing Supplementary materials such as photographs, charts, tables, should be put in the appendices at the back of your work. You should ensure that these items are relevant to your work and are referenced in your contents page at the beginning of your work. Appendices should not be excessively lengthy such as reports and consultation papers, and should not be large documents that can be easily accessed by referencing via a link on the Internet. For further information on referencing, including tutorials and a reference generator, visit Cite2Write. Submission Full guidance on how to access and/or submit assignments will be provided on commencement of the course. You will be sent your CMI Hub login details via email from CMI directly. Please make sure you login at the start of your programme, so that any technical problems can be addressed at an early stage. You will also find this site useful for accessing links to wider reading resources to support your studies. Uploading your assignment will be done through Classnote. You will also receive an email link for this page. Your assignment(s) should be submitted by 12.00 noon on the deadline date. If you have any difficulty with using CMI Hub website, or Classnote contact the CMI Programme Co-ordinator at gs.cmi@qub.ac.uk or tel 028 9097 5049 Plagiarism, Duplication, Collusion and Fabrication Assessed work submitted by students must be their own work. All students will be required to produce a signed statement that the work they have submitted is their own work. Students will be asked to submit their work via TurnItIn prior to submission - further instructions will be provided. As a student, you are expected to engage in the learning process throughout your programme of study by participating in sessions and completing assignments of various kinds that are the product of your own study or research. The following are academic offences and will be dealt with in accordance with the University’s Procedures for Dealing with Academic Offences: Plagiarism: is defined as the presentation of the work of others as the writer’s own. Duplication: when a student re-uses significant, identical, or nearly identical portion(s) of his or her own work where such work has been previously submitted for credit within the University or at another institution. Copying: where a student permits another student to copy his/her work submitted for assessment. Both parties will be dealt with in accordance with the procedures. Collusion: when two or more students work together on an assignment that is meant to be done individually. It is expected that the work being assessed, unless specifically designated as a group assessment, shall be the work solely of the student submitting it. Fabrication: where a student claims to have carried out experiments, interviews or any form of research which he/she has not in fact carried out, or where he/she invents or falsifies data, evidence or experimental results. It is also an academic offence for a student knowingly to make use of falsified data as described above. The University’s Procedures for Dealing with Academic Offences are at: http://www.qub.ac.uk/directorates/AcademicStudentAffairs/AcademicAffairs/GeneralRegulations Assessment Student assignments will go through three stages of assessment and review before the final mark can be confirmed: All student assignments in the unit will be individually marked by the assessor, The Queen’s internal verifier reviews a sample of the assignments to confirm the marking criteria have been appropriately applied The external moderator ensures consistent marking. This provides the quality assurance expected of an accredited programme. You will be advised of your outcome for each unit once this process is complete. Assessment Quality Review and Moderation The Graduate School will undertake a range of mechanisms to ensure the quality and standards of its CMI provision. This includes requesting feedback from unit participants at the end of each unit review following each unit as well as at annual programme review. If you have any concerns, feedback or suggestions at any point, please contact the Graduate School. The CMI Awarding Body will visit the University each year to review resources, assessment schemes, assessment quality assurance, engagement of learners, equal opportunities, course organisation and course review. They also appoint an academic moderator, whose role is to quality control the assessment process and to standardise assessment across centres. As part of this role, the external moderator will view samples of assessed work. Grading Criteria Students will be awarded an overall pass grade for the Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership, or will be referred. Each assignment will be marked separately. Students will be informed as soon as possible of the outcome from each unit. Refer and Resubmission Rules Students are awarded a “Refer” grade when they have failed to achieve the minimum criteria for a pass. If a student receives a “Refer” grade the following rules apply: A student that receives a refer grade is allowed to resubmit twice.* If a student fails to meet the criteria for a pass, on the second resubmission, they will be awarded an overall Fail for the unit. If a student receives a fail, the following rules apply: A student keeps the credits for any unit already passed. The student must re-take the unit. An entirely new piece of work must be submitted by the student. Any further attempts to complete the qualification must take place by the certification end date of the qualification. * Please note, for 2019-20 Learners, if a second re-submission is required, it may not be possible to complete the assessment and moderation process before December 2019 graduation. Award of the CMI Qualification Students must achieve a pass grade in both units in order to be eligible for the Level 7 Certificate qualification. Should a student successfully complete one unit of 6 credits, they are eligible for a CMI Level 7 Award. At present the Award is not offered as a stand-alone option to Queen’s CMI students, but may be offered to those students with mitigating or exceptional circumstances which prevent completion of two units. Appeals If you have queries about an assessment outcome, in the first instance this should be discussed with your tutor or the Training and Development Manager. This will not in any way prevent you from making a formal appeal. Please note that an appeal cannot modify the assessment outcome. Students will have the opportunity to feed back to Queen’s University Belfast in relation to, equality and diversity, course content and any other area of the course through the overall evaluation channels. Complaints Feedback from students help us to review and improve our services, and tells us what we should do more of if we are doing well. The Graduate School encourages students to take advantage of feedback mechanisms, such as end of unit evaluations and student surveys. If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of the course you can make a complaint by speaking to the Tutor or the Events and Training Co-ordinator, who will attempt to resolve the situation. Should your query or concern not be addressed at this stage, you are able to make a formal complaint to the Graduate School Manager, Kara Bailie. It is in the interests of students and the University to resolve problems at an early stage. Refer to the University’s Complaints Procedure.
