MET-101 Introduction to Weather Fall 2014 Lab 1- The Vertical Structure of the Atmosphere (Not Collected) NAME: _____________________________ Objectives: 1. Improve comprehension of the vertical structure of the atmosphere in terms of pressure and temperature. 2. Become familiar with utilization of the Internet as a source of scientific data, research and information. Activities: 1. “Comprehend” the Pressure versus Altitude relationship – we will do this activity as a class (see link on web page – LAB 1) Answer the following: - “As Altitude Increases, Pressure (decreases/increases) at a (decreasing/increasing) Rate.” (circle the correct choices) 2. Analyze the Sunday morning rawinsonde data from KALB (Albany, NY) and KMFL (Miami, FL): (data will be provided in class) - Plot the temperature vs pressure data on the attached Stuve diagram. Connect the points. 3. Analyze the tropopause: Enter the data from the “raw” data listing in the table below. The tropopause (TRP) has at ______mb data in Albany and at _______ mb data in Miami. TROPOPAUSE Albany Miami HEIGHT (m) TEMPERATURE ( C ) Complete the following: - The tropopause is warmer and lower at (Albany/Miami), which is a (Polar/Tropical) location. (circle the correct choices) - The tropopause is colder and higher at (Albany/Miami), which is a (Polar/Tropical) location. (circle the correct choices) Note – Polar locations are those influenced mainly by polar air masses. The opposite is true for tropical locations. 4. Complete the following table from the raw data (note height is in kilometers): - C a l c u l ate the lapse rate (divide the difference in temperature by the difference in height) between 850 and 250 mb (use the correct units !!). Albany _____________________ o C km -1 Miami _____________________ o C km -1 - Note that the temperature increases with height at Albany above the tropopause. This condition is referred to as an ________________________________. (Hint: See the textbook, CH 1 – thermal structure) 5. Go to the following web site: (http://amdar.noaa.gov/demo_java/ (use the mouse to draw a “rubber band” – click and drag a box to zoom into the New York/Long Island Area.) We’ll do this activity as a class. Note that data from aircraft supplement radiosonde data. Which airport(s) appears to have the most aircraft going in or out? (zoom in and overlay airports) Look for a Southwest flight going into Islip. (Note, there may not be any) If there is a flight - was it landing or taking off?
