How to do your own re-enrolment
Welcome to the re-enrolment training session for 
Bachelor of Computing.
Why do you need to be here?
•You may be unsure of what units make up your course.
•You may have failed a unit and need to "catch up".
•You may have special conditions placed on your enrolment.
•You may want to accelerate your course using summer or 
winter units.   
•Units you expected to do may have disappeared.
•New units may have become available.
If you mess it up:
Things that can go wrong:
•Enrol in units that are not running.
•Enrol in units that do not count toward your degree.
•Enrol in units without completing the pre-requisites. 
•Results in premature un-enrolment or failure 
•Enrol in units you have already done (under another name/code)
•Costs you more money
•Degree takes longer
•Academic record looks bad to employers
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be enrolled in the correct units.
These are the steps:
1. Confirm which program you are enrolled in.
2. Check the rules of the program.
3. Find out which major you are doing.
4. Find the list of compulsory units in your program.
5. Check your progress. 
6. Plan which compulsory units you will do in 2010.
7. (Choose electives for 2010)
8. Check pre-requisites.
9. Check that the units run in sem. 1, 2, etc. 
10. Check that the lectures don't clash.

There are many Bachelors of Computing, with different rules for 
each one. 
2005-2008 – I052 (streamed version)
2009 – I057 (Majors and Minors version)
2007-2008 – I055 (Network Design & Security badge)
2009 – I058 (ND&S M&M version)
2010 – I030, I031, I032 (various BICT versions)
How do you check?

2. Check the rules of the program
Rules (I057):
• 300 credit points (24 units) + HIT0004 Careers in the 
Curriculum
• made up of:
• 200 credit point (16 unit) Major: 
• Business Computing or
• Network Design & Security or
• Multimedia  & Games Development or
• Software Technology
• 100 credit points (8 units) of exemptions, Advanced 
Minors, Minors or free electives (if less than 4 units 
remaining)
2. Check the rules of the program
Rules (I057):
• Must complete (or be exempted from) all units in one of the 
Majors.
• Remaining units may be anything – electives, exemptions, 
Minors or Advanced Minors.
Notes: 
• No further exemptions will be granted after your first 
semester.
• No changing Major after first year units completed. 
3. Find out which major you are doing.

HIT2425 Business Systems Programming or 
HIT2411 Data Communications and Networks or
HIT2405 Requirements Analysis and Modelling?

4. Find the list of compulsory units 
in your program.
Check the lists on course finder (about ¼ down the page) or

5. Check your progress. 
1. Print the program planner or the relevant parts of the course 
finder entry
2. Go back to My.Swinburne and observe your results so far
3. Mark off each completed unit on your program planner. 
1. Add the mark / result to the planner. 
2. Mark off matched electives against the compulsory unit 
you were exempted from.
3. Mark off unmatched (XMNICT00n) electives against 
Minor or Advanced Minor electives. 
If you have been awarder a CP result, the unit counts toward 
your degree but it will not count as a pre-requisite. 
5. Check your progress. 
The following units will need to have a clear pass:
BC:
HIT1404, HIT1401, HIT1402, HIT2405, HIT3406, HIT3407, 
HIT3409, HIT3410
ST:
HIT1404, HIT1402, HIT1307, HIT2037, HIT2308, HIT1312
ND&S:
HIT1404, HET104, HIT1307, HIT2037, HIT2308, HET410 (if 
doing HIT3703 or HIT3703)
MM&GD:
HIT1404, HIT1307, HIT2037, HIT2308
5. Check your progress. 
If you have been awarded a CP for one of these critical pre-
requisites, you must apply in writing to FICT Admin to have 
the mark changed to N (fail), after which you must repeat the 
unit. 
6. Plan which compulsory units you will do 
in 2010. 
• Choose the next four remaining units in your program. 
• Generally they should be completed in the sequence shown 
on the course planner. 
• However, if the unit is not offered in the next semester, you 
may have to swap it with another unit in your Major.

7. Choose electives for 2010 
• If there are uncompleted rows for Minor electives, you may 
need to choose a minor to study. Some ICT units can be 
found on the Course Finder page for the program – look for 
the Advanced Minors. 
• You will not be able to complete an ICT Minor. 
• Non-ICT Minors are published by other faculties and can be 
found by looking up other degrees on Course Finder. 
• Most student choose other ICT units, but there is no 
requirement that these electives be ICT units. 
• If you already have 8 unmatched electives, you will have no 
electives to choose – you only need to complete the Major.

8. Check pre-requisites
Go to Course Finder, and click on the Unit Search.
• For each unit you are going to enrol in, check it's pre-
requisites in Unit Search. 
• A co-requisite means that the required unit may be either 
completed before or concurrently with the dependant unit. 
• If you have not completed the pre-requisites for a unit, or are 
not enrolling in a co-requisite, you cannot attempt that unit. 
• If it is an elective, choose something else. 
• If it is a compulsory unit, enrol in the pre-requisite instead. 
• If the pre-requisite is not in your course, consult with your 
program manager (Jacqui Martin) or program convenor. You 
may have completed an equivalent unit.  
9. Check that the units run 
Go to 
http://allocate.swin.edu.au/aplus/aptimetable
Look up each unit in the next semester. 
Make sure that each unit you intend to enrol in is actually running 
in the required semester. 
Semesters are now called teaching periods in MySwinburne.  
The timetabling system uses a third naming scheme. 
Here is the key:
Semester 1 = Teaching Period 1  = S1 (TP1)
Semester 2 = Teaching Period 5 = S2 (TP5)
Summer Term = TP8  = TA (examined before new year) or
TP0 = TB (examined after new year)
Winter Term = TP4 = WT
9. Check that the units run 
If you find that the unit is not available in the right semester, you 
need to return to steps 6 or 7 and revise your plan. 
Some units have been discontinued, re-named or replaced by 
equivalent units. Your program manager will be able to 
advise you what to do if this happens. 
Make sure that you have the pre-requisites to attempt any units 
you choose as alternatives. 
10. Check that the lectures don't clash
Return to the timetable builder at
http://allocate.swin.edu.au/aplus/aptimetable
Select each unit (the one in the chosen 
semester), and click 
Add to copy it to the 
lower box. 
Repeat the search for each 
of the units that 
semester.

When all of the semester's units you have 
chosen to study are in the lower box, 
scroll down and select Lectures and click 
on the Grid icon. 
Allocate will display a timetable showing the 
times of each lecture.

Check that the lectures for any two units do 
not clash. 
You must be able to get to one of each type of 
lecture. 
Large units will have a choice but some will 
not. 
If there is no clash, you can now fill in the 
enrolment form. 
Some recent changes
• HIT3712 has been replaced by 
• HIT3702 Enterprise Network Server Administration (sem 1) 
or HIT3703 Enterprise Services and Security (sem 2). 
The pre-requisites have not changed. 
• HET307 has been replaced by
• HET317 Network security and resilience
• HET208 has been replaced by 
• HET238 3D Modelling
• HIT3421 Database Implementation is no-longer offered. 
• Do HIT3422 Database Performance Issues (sem 2). 
• HIT3416 now has prerequisites of HIT3407, HIT3409 and 
HIT3410

 IBL is a program offered at undergraduate level in which 
students undertake a full-time paid industry placement in an 
area relevant to their studies 
 Students undertaking IBL will do so for a minimum of 24         
(6 months) or 48 weeks (12 months) depending on the 
program of study

IBL Selection Criteria
 Must have completed at least a third of their course
 Must attain at least a credit average (65%) over the 
duration of the degree
 All students will be interviewed by the Industry Liaison 
Office to assist with their interview skills
