Train in contemporary labs, prepare and test samples, present data and contribute to important research. Course details Character Traits People who are successful in this industry have: Honesty & Integrity - no cheating on results Patience - accurate work takes time Attentiveness - technical detailed work Motivation - boring, routine task, can be mundane Assessments Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned so far and identify what knowledge or skills need further development. In this course you will undertake knowledge assessments - short answers and multiple choice questions. Compare course levels The Certificate III is an entry level course and the right place to start if you don't have a strong background in chemistry, biology or simple statistics. You will focus on sample preparation in a supervised setting. This course provides a great foundation for the Certificate IV and sets you up for study success. The Certificate IV level course focuses on non-instrumental analysis of samples and qualifies you to work semi-autonomously as a technician. If you have recently left school, it is recommended that you have completed some science in Year 10 - Year 12 to ensure you are prepared. The Diploma level course focuses on instrumental analysis and qualifies you to work unsupervised as a technician. You need to complete the Certificate IV course as a prerequisite. Excursions Depending on your campus location you may have the opportunity to participate in field trip excursions that take you on location collecting and testing samples, for example: biological, chemical and material samples from - chemical processing plant, rivers, farms, and contaminated sites. Hands-on skills You will gain hands-on experience in: Laboratory work Working with chemical and biological solutions Performing chemical experiments Real world projects You will have several opportunities to work on real-world testing projects where you will collect or choose a sample, prepare it, test it, collate the data, and then report on your findings. Campus facilities TAFE NSW offers you a range of study environments to enhance your learning and employability. You will learn in chemical and biological laboratories that have been designed and built on OECD Good Laboratory Practices guidelines, and provide an accurate simulation of modern, industry standard laboratories. You will also have access to industry specific computer rooms, studios, study areas, presentation areas and general student facilities at most TAFE NSW campuses. Industry trends As society needs more assurances in the products and services they buy and use, the need for testing the quality of products and services is increasing. The five year forecast to 2023 from the Department of Jobs and Small Business for Science Technicians is 10.9% growth. Course of the future Due to legislative requirements and ever increasing consumer demand, the need for quality and composition testing is growing exponentially.
