 Thesis covers research on position tracking, SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) , 3D 
map creation and sensor fusion for mobile robots with limited processing power 
 Lead author of five peer reviewed papers, including two accepted at top international conferences

 Developed software (over 30,000 lines) in C++ and OpenCL capable of accurate, building scale, 3D 
position tracking, map creation and loop closing using Laser Rangefinder and RGB­D camera; first 
time such detailed and accurate mapping has been able to run in real­time on a mobile GPU 
 Developed skills in areas including parallel programming, real­time software, linear algebra,
probabilistic robotics, 3D geometry, problem solving  and optimization

 Achieved 1st Class Honours and the University Medal for top performance in degree with a 
weighted average mark of more than 92/100 
 Awarded CISRA Project Prize for thesis on Automatic Synthesis of Device Drivers after code was 
able to auto generate a working simplified Linux driver for a UART device from its specifications 
 Wrote an entire Operating System with multithreading, demand paging and a file system in 12 
weeks for UNSW’s most advanced Operating Systems course, resulting in a High Distinction grade 
 Won over 18 prizes during degree, including Engineers Australia Top Final Year Student 2010, IET 
Student Prize for Outstanding Achievements in 2010 and 2008 Sensory Networks Algorithms Prize

2015 – Present  Casual Lecturer 
UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA 
 Prepared and delivered two hour lectures to 70 students in an advanced Computer Vision course  
 Received positive feedback from students in person and through official course feedback on clarity 
of explanations of complex mathematical concepts and presentation style 
2007 – Present   Casual Tutor and Lab Demonstrator 
UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA 
 Tutored 25 courses (approx. 1,300 students) including Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, 
Embedded Systems, Data Structures and Algorithms and Object Orientated Design  
 Developed techniques and analogies to explain complex concepts in areas including algorithm 
design, complexity, object orientated design, 3D geometry and embedded programming 
 Wrote exam management software which is used by hundreds of students every year, to allow 
computing students to read and answer their final exams on computers  
2006 – 2010  Industrial Experience Engineer 
CANON INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH AUSTRALIA 
 Granted Australian patent “Restoration of Warped Document Images” for algorithm to detect the 
spine of books from scanned images and unwarp the text distorted by the curvature of the spine  
 Collaborated with Engineers by collecting and iterating requirements to design and build an 
automated experimentation platform for several Computer Vision projects 
 Implemented prior art algorithms in Computer Vision from research papers and prepared a report 
to allow my team to evaluate their project against state of art methods 
2009 – 2010   UNSW 2010 RoboCup Standard Platform League Soccer Team (Taste of Research Scholarship) 
UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA 
 Won 2nd place in the world at the competition and 1st in technical challenges. RoboCup Soccer is an 
annual international competition where teams program robots to autonomously play soccer 
 Responsible for designing entire Computer Vision component from ground up, including goal, field 
line, ball and robot detection and various high level behaviours 
 Closely collaborated with other team members to ensure features were implemented in the most 
useful order and to make sure other team member’s projects were on track 
ADDITIONAL   
   Languages: Expert in C++, C and Java. Experience in Python, Perl, PHP, JavaScript, Matlab and ARM 
Assembly Language. Technologies: ROS, OpenCL, CUDA, OpenCV and PCL 
 Developed personal photography website (adrianratter.com), including writing a custom 
WordPress template and adding new features to several WordPress plugins 
 Interests include adventure travel, nature photography and reading
