Home Study with us Laboratory Medicine Explore our courses Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine 3.5 years full-time, up to 8 years part-time Launceston 3.5 years full-time Launceston CRICOS 093679E Focussed, personalised learning Studying a quota course with a limited intake means more one-on-one teaching and personalised learning experiences Practical skills for a hands-on career Hands-on laboratory experience from day one, which increase throughout your course Professional experience placement Undertake a whole semester of clinical placement in an accredited diagnostic pathology laboratory Laboratory Medicine is at the very heart of healthcare Prepare yourself to work in specialised medical and pathology laboratories that provide essential diagnostic services. You'll gain knowledge and a variety of practical laboratory skills in clinical chemistry, haematology, blood transfusion science, microbiology, histopathology, human molecular biology, immunology and more. This course prepares you for your future career by including hands-on laboratory experience right from first year. These experiences increase throughout your studies, culminating in the third year where each unit contains an average of three hours of practical laboratory experience per week. In your final semester, you’ll participate in a Professional Experience Placement (PEP). This work-integrated learning approach allows you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge in a workplace environment, immersing you in a professional healthcare setting to gain a better understanding of the roles of professionals within the health care system. The opportunities are broad, including roles with diagnostic pathology labs, both public and private facilities, or within the medical research field. With the skills and knowledge delivered by this course, you may find yourself providing vital diagnostic services as part of a small remote team in a regional hospital, or contributing more specialised skills as part of the combined operations of a large laboratory in a major city. Career opportunities exist in hospital clinical and pathology laboratories, private pathology services, blood transfusion services, veterinary pathology laboratories and public health laboratories. These are located all over the world, meaning you can make a vital contribution to the heart of healthcare both at home, or abroad. You will also be prepared to undertake further postgraduate training in biomedical research, leading to potential career options in research organisations.
