1Updated: 1/09/2011 AirUWS Wireless Network – detailed notes for XP This fact sheet covers connecting to the University’s wireless network, AirUWS, using Windows XP and Internet Explorer. The current version of this fact sheet, and those for users of other platforms can be found on the AirUWS web site – http://www.uws.edu.au/wireless. Most users should connect to the newer network AirUWS-Lite instead of AirUWS. AirUWS is available at no extra charge at key locations on campus, including teaching spaces and other areas where students congregate. Coverage maps can be found on the AirUWS web site. AirUWS is not available off campus. Preparation: You If you haven’t already done so, activate your MyUWSAccount at: https://myuwsaccount.uws.edu.au/. You’ll need administrative user rights on your laptop to install the connection software. Almost all regular users of UWS standard owned/leased laptops will have sufficient rights – if not, contact the ITS Service Desk. Users of privately owned laptops will need to check they have sufficient rights. Don’t leave it to the last minute to test that you can connect! Your laptop Visit http://www.uws.edu.au/wireless to confirm your laptop meets the minimum specifications. Users of UWS standard laptops must have successfully logged in while the laptop is connected to the wired network, before they can log into the same laptop on either the wireless network or as a stand alone device. Wired login is required to establish your user account on the machine. Your web browser Most web browsers will work with AirUWS provided you set the proxy correctly. These instructions describe setting the proxy and some other settings in Internet Explorer (IE) only, but the process will be similar with other browsers. To access the internet via AirUWS, your browser must use our proxy server. UWS standard laptops come with the correct settings; however users of other laptops will need to ensure their browser’s LAN settings are set to automatically detect settings. For non-UWS use, you may need to change this setting to that recommended by your Internet Services Provider (ISP). • Open IE’s Tools menu à Internet Options à Connections tab à LAN settings… à ensure Your use of AirUWS is subject to the University’s IT Acceptable Use of Resources Policy. 2Updated: 1/09/2011 Automatically detect settings is the only option ticked à click OK. IE’s proxy settings If you have a blank or complex home page address, the browser may not redirect to the AirUWS login screen. If so, try setting your home page to http://www.uws.edu.au. Resetting your home page for non- UWS use is optional. • Open IE’s Tools menu à Internet options à General tab à Home page à enter the new home page details à click OK. Set your home page here 3Updated: 1/09/2011 Reusing browser windows when launching a shortcut (eg, clicking a link in email) means you may accidentally move away from the AirUWS portal page and be disconnected. To change this setting: • Open IE’s Tools menu à Internet Options à Advanced tab à scroll to Browser settings à untick Reuse windows for launching shortcuts à click OK. Make certain Reuse windows for launching shortcuts is not ticked You’ll also need to turn off your browser’s pop-up blocker, or ensure that pop-ups from *.uws.edu. au are allowed. • Open IE’s Tools menu à Pop-up Blocker à Click Turn Off Pop-up Blocker To reverse this action for non-UWS web access: • Open IE’s Tools menu à Pop-up Blocker à Click Turn On Pop-up Blocker Connecting: Ensure your wireless hardware is switched on. Refer to your laptop’s user manual. To enable your wireless connection, locate your My Network Places icon – on your desktop if you use XP in classic mode, or in your start menu in XP mode. Right click the My Network Places icon and choose Properties. Right click the wireless connection and choose enable. 4Updated: 1/09/2011 If necessary, enable your wireless connection (detailed folder view) Once enabled, right click the wireless connection again and choose View Available Wireless Networks. Choose View Available Wireless Networks 5Updated: 1/09/2011 The Wireless Connection Window will open. Select AirUWS and press Connect. After selecting AirUWS or AIRUWS, press Connect Wait for the process to show you’re connected (usually less than 30 seconds). The laptop is now connected to AirUWS Note: UWS issued standard XP laptops try to synchronise as soon as the connection is made. Because you haven’t yet authenticated (logged in), synchronisation will fail. This is not an error. If both AirUWS and AIRUWS are available, choose the one with the strongest signal. 6Updated: 1/09/2011 Authenticate (log in) Open Internet Explorer. You should be automatically redirected to the login portal, where you’ll enter your MyUWSAccount credentials. The AirUWS login screen After logging in, Internet Explorer will download and launch TunnelGuard, which checks your laptop meets the AirUWS specifications. If TunnelGuard doesn’t start, you probably need to update your Java Runtime Environment (JRE). A link to Java installation files is available on the login page. Alternatively, use a connected computer to go to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and download the offline version to your USB drive. Return your USB drive to your laptop, and install the JRE. TunnelGuard should now work after you login. If TunnelGuard finds your laptop doesn’t comply, it will prevent you going further. Known Java issue IT staff have discovered an issue with Java update 18. Changes to improve security made in this release cause a warning that “The publisher cannot be verified by a trusted source”. Although a button to dismiss the warning is provided, the warning stays on the screen, and you will not be able to login to AirUWS. Workaround: To get past this problem, you will need to make changes to your Java and Internet Explorer settings. These changes may be a security risk, and should be reversed when you use your computer outside of AirUWS. 7Updated: 1/09/2011 Java: Open Windows Control Panel. Double click the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel. Choose the Advanced tab, and expand Security. Untick any option related to certificate validation and revocation. Untick any option related to certificate validation and revocation. Internet Explorer: From IE’s Tools menu, choose Internet Options à Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Security section. Untick any option related to certificate validation and revocation. After installing Java or changing the settings, restart your machine. TunnelGuard should now work when you attempt to connect to AirUWS. Changing these settings is a security risk! Reverse changes when not using AirUWS. 8Updated: 1/09/2011 TunnelGuard has found this laptop meets AirUWS specifications If your laptop complies, the portal window will open and NetDirect (Nortel Networks Virtual Private Network (VPN) client) will automatically download and run. You must install this software to use AirUWS. The AirUWS portal screen – don’t close this window! When NetDirect successfully installs, you’ll see a banner message welcoming you to the campus VPN Gateway. You must wait for this message before going further (it may take a minute or so). Press OK. Note: If you don’t see the message, you haven’t connected – close Internet Explorer and start the authentication process again. 9Updated: 1/09/2011 Click OK on the welcome message. A Nortel NetDirect bubble notification will appear briefly in your system tray For security reasons, each time you connect you’ll go through the authentication, download and installation process. I’m connected – what can I do? Once fully connected, minimise the portal window, but don’t close it. If you close the portal window, you’ll be disconnected from AirUWS and have to start again. Open a new instance of your browser to surf the web. This means that you’ll need to click the icon used to launch the browser program again – don’t just open a new window or a new tab. Programs such as Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger, and email software should work normally. To improve security, AirUWS users are required to re-authenticate when accessing external websites. This is the process required when using the general purpose computer labs. Enter your MyUWSAccount credentials, and press OK to continue. You may be asked to authenticate more than once. Authenticate with your MyUWSAccount credentials Don’t close the AirUWS portal window until you log out, or you’ll be disconnected 10Updated: 1/09/2011 Note: Use your ISP’s web portal to access personal email. UWS cannot provide help with personal email Staff using UWS standard laptops will be able to print normally, synchronise off line files, and connect to their network based files and network shares. Private laptops are unable to connect to network shares, synchronise off-line files or print, but will have internet access. To print from a privately owned laptop, save your work to a USB drive, which you can take to an-on campus computer lab to print. Click this icon to see if you are able to connect to your network based drives The Offline Files Status window opens after clicking the icon How do I log off? Save your work, and use the logout link on the portal page. Users of UWS laptops should also disable the wireless connection to prevent synchronisation issues on shut down, which can cause the computer to freeze. Minimum specifications: • The current minimum specifications can be found at: http://www.uws.edu.au/wireless Help In the first instance, contact the IT Support Officers located at the general purpose computer labs. Users can also contact the ITS Service Desk for support. Save your work before logging off 11Updated: 1/09/2011 Tips: Save often. Wireless is less reliable than wired networks, and you could lose your data if your connection is lost. Save often to minimise the risk. Don’t try and connect wirelessly while still running a wired connection – the laptop may get “confused” about which connection to use. Inactivity timeouts apply. Users are automatically logged off after lengthy inactivity, allowing others to connect. After logging into their computer, but before logging into the wireless network, users of UWS standard laptops running XP will receive a warning “Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile. Attempting to log you on with your local profile….” The roaming profile is not available until you are connected. Press OK, and then proceed as per the start of this document.
